There are different types of candles you can make. All you need is to follow the simple steps in basic candle making and add a little creativity. The different types of candles are discussed below.
First is the most common type called gel candles. It consists of gelled mineral oils. It appearance is transparent and it feels soft, similar to Jello. This type is placed inside a container.

There are also container candles poured inside a heat-resistant container such as tins or glass and then it is burned inside the container when utilized.

Pillar candle is poured onto a mold ad then extracted, typically having a diameter of about 2 up to 3 inches. Thus, they have 1 or more wicks but they are free standing.

Votive candles are small and cylindrical, about 2 ½ inches in height and 1 to 2 inches in diameter. This is placed inside a votive candle holder in order to retain the wax. This is because they liquefy when they are lit.
Taper candles are one of the more common varieties. They appear thin, wider along the base and they tend to narrow upon reaching the top. They are about 6 up to 18 inches in length and they are placed inside a candle holder. They are also called "dinner candles".

Tealight Candles are small cylindrical types filled within a plastic or metal cup. It is about 1 up to 1 ½ inches high and 1 up to 2 inches in diameter.

Floating candles are poured onto a mold with various shapes and it is used in a bowl filled with water. They tend to float, adding a special touch once they are lit. This is since wax is noted as buoyant.

Wickless candles are generally poured onto a heat-resistant container, having no wick at all. This is used by placing it on top of a warmer in order to have the scent released without using flames.

Tips in Candle Making

When it comes to the wick, the length and size to be used depends on the size of the candle you plan to make. If you will have a large wick, your candle tends to melt faster. If you will have a very small wick, it will not produce a good light. This means that the size of the wick should be proportional to your candle's size.

When choosing as well as positioning your wick, you need to initially utilize an appropriate size. This should be according to the planned diameter of the candle you will be making. The recommended sizes are 6 to 8 ply or ½ inches, 12 to 14 ply or 1 inch, 16 to 18 ply or 2 inches, and 20 to 24 ply or 3 inches.

Make sure you utilize wicks that have larger diameters which do not easily melt. Good examples are paraffin and beeswax.

In order to keep a straight wick in your candle's central portion, it is advisable to tie its end onto a stick placed over your container or mold.
The different types of wicks include the Square Braided Wicks best for molded, dipped and container candles; Metal Core Wicks best for container candles; and Flat Braided Wicks best for tapered candles.

When it comes to the color or wax dye of the candles, it is not advisable to utilize the colors used for cosmetics or soap. This is because it clogs the wick. Since adding color or dye to your candles can give it a more personal touch, it is best to make use of concentrated liquid or sold colors. If you will be coloring candles by batches, it is best to use concentrated liquid. A single drop can actually color about 1 lb. of wax.
In coloring melted wax, make sure the candle wax was opaque when it was still solid or maybe even before it was melted. It will then become blear when it has melted and is ready to be dyed or colored. This becomes apparent when the melted wax hardens as it cools. It will turn opaque with its color fading.

Safety Tips on Candle Making

On no occasion should you leave the process of melting wax without assigning someone else to watch over it. This is because was extremely flammable and can cause fires.

If fire should arise, never use water to put it off. It is best to place a fire extinguisher nearby.

Never heat wax to temperatures more than 100 degrees C.

Make sure you are using a reliable thermometer for monitoring the wax's temperature.

Never place the wax directly on the fire while melting it. It is best to utilize a wax melter or double broiler for this process.

When handling the container or kettle with melted wax, always utilize a pot holder so as to avoid untoward accidents.

Make sure to prepare these materials before you begin with your candle making adventure: crock pot or a double broiler, thermometer, candle wax chips, glass container with lid, wick, essential oils or scented candle oils and food coloring. Just a reminder before you start making your candles to keep a careful watch at your wax, keep it away from flame for it can catch fire.

Using a crock pot or double broiler heat the wax and when the wax reaches 160 degrees, mix the scented oil and stir. While the wax is heating, you can pre-heat the candle jar in the oven on lowest setting. This way the wax will adhere better to the jar. After the wax has melted, take the glass candle jar out of the oven and carefully pour the candle ingredients into the jar. You must leave a room at the top so that the lid will fit and save a little wax for topping off.

After that, straighten the wick and lower the metal disk base into the melted wax and try your best to put the disk as close to the center of the candle as possible. Allow the candle to cool down to where there is a semi hardened crust on top and then take the wick and adjust it so that it is centered in the jar. Let the candle cool completely at room temperature, this would take as much as six hours.

You can now trim the wick to about a quarter inch and there you go, your very own custom candle is ready for you to enjoy. You can also try making candles using different containers such as porcelain, brass cans or anything that will withstand the intense heat from the plane. There you go, if in case you didn't like the finish product, the good thing about it is that you can always reheat the wax and start over again.

Heat the wax in the crock pot or double broiler and when the wax reaches 160 degrees, mix the scented oil and stir. While the wax is heating, you can pre-heat the candle jar in the oven on lowest setting. After the wax has melted, take the glass candle jar out of the oven and carefully pour the candle ingredients into the jar. You must leave a room at the top so that the lid will fit and save a little wax for topping off.

Now, straighten the wick and lower the metal disk base into the melted wax and try your best to put the disk as close to the center of the candle as possible. Allow the candle to cool down to where there is a semi hardened crust on top and then take the wick and adjust it so that it is centered in the jar. Let the candle cool completely at room temperature, this would take as much as six hours.

Trim wick to about a quarter inch and there you go, your very own custom candle is ready for you to enjoy. You can also try making candles using different containers such as porcelain, brass cans or anything that will withstand the intense heat from the plane.

Other Candle Making Tips- Keep Kids and Pets Away

With the possibility looming of a wax fire as described above, it should be obvious that children and pets should be kept away from any hot wax. Even when the wax has been poured into a mold caution should be exercised. If the mold happens to be aluminum it can get very hot and burn the skin. Don't ever heat wax or start to heat wax by putting it in a microwave oven. Heat can quickly build up inside the wax and cause it to explode. In any case melting wax should never be left unattended and you will need to have a wax thermometer to monitor the temperature of your wax at all times. Be careful not to let your wax get onto your heating element as it could very possibly ignite and cause a fire.

Other Precautions

You will need to have a good metal pouring pot to pour your wax into molds. Be sure to use one that can withstand high temperatures and has a handle and spout. Be sure to store your wax away from heat in a cool and dry place. If somehow melted wax does come in contact with the skin, run cold water over the area. This will cool the wax and make it solidify such that it can be pulled off the skin. You will most likely need to treat the affected skin area as you would treat a burn. Don't allow water to drip into hot wax as it can explode and fly onto your skin and cause burns. If the exploding hot wax were to get into your eyes, it is obvious that very serious problems could result, so this tip is extremely important. Also, be sure to use only dyes and fragrances that have been designed specifically for candle making. Lastly, don't ever pour melted wax down a drain.

Although candle making has its dangers due to the need to handle hot melted wax, most of the problems mentioned above can be easily avoided if you are aware of the dangers of hot wax and use common sense when making candles. If you have the right equipment and are prepared and consider the above candle making tips, your projects will be executed smoothly and serious problems will be avoided.

Also, you'll only be using 1-3 drops of essential oil for each candle, so you'll be able to make a lot of candles for each scent that you purchase. Remember to put the drops into your hot wax mixture just before it is poured into a mold. In that way the essential oils won't evaporate as quickly as they would have had they been in the hot wax mixture for some time. If you are using a dye to color your candles, that should be done prior to adding the essential oils for fragrance.

First, you need something to melt the soy wax in. A double boiler is the safest and most effective method for melting wax. Since it uses indirect heat, you won't have to worry about burning the wax. Double boilers are easy to find, and are relatively inexpensive. If you already have one, you can use it to melt your soy wax. You may, however, want to purchase an extra one just for your soy candle making.

The second piece of soy candle making equipment you need is a thermometer. A candy thermometer works best. Since the soy wax melts quickly, you will need to monitor the temperature of the melting soy wax to ensure it doesn't get too hot. Fragrance can be lost to evaporation if it takes a long time for the soy candle to cool. Candy thermometers can usually be purchased at any store that sells kitchen equipment.

Third, you need a vessel to pour the melted wax into the molds. If you are going to be making small soy candles, such as votives, it will be easier to pour using a Pyrex measuring cup rather than the pot the soy wax was melted in. Any heat safe pourable cup will work for this.

The fourth and final soy candle making equipment necessary to make soy candles is a scale to measure the wax. Depending on the size of the soy candles you are making, you will need to know how much soy wax to use. A digital scale works best for this because it gives very accurate measurements.

As you can see, you don't need to spend a fortune on special equipment to make soy candles. Most of them may already be in your kitchen, and the rest are common supplies that can be purchased inexpensively.

So, you want to make candles? 

There are many types of candles to choose from when you consider candle making.  The key is to choose one type of candle to make and get that one down pat before starting another.  Start slow and build your craft.  This will give you a feel for working with wax and the equipment necessary for making candles.  With so many methods and types of candles that you can make it can get very confusing and frustrating. 

Start by working with the basic poured candle.  For this type of candle you will need the following; a dedicated pot that will be used only for melting your wax, a candy thermometer so that you can check the wax temperature, a wooden spoon or two to work with, wax, dye, and wick supplies which you can buy at your local craft store.  You may also want to purchase additives such as vybar or steric acid because these can increase the burn time of your candle. Paraffin is the most commonly used wax for candle making today and the best for a beginner to start with. 

Find containers that are functional, decorative, and safe.  Some of the best places to find containers are from thrift stores, yard sales, and your own kitchen.  Examples of containers are things such as old teacups, funny coffee mugs, good heavy glasses, and of course the Mason jar.

You have what you need, now what?

After gathering all the supplies and equipment in one place you are ready to get started. A word of caution here is to be sure that all your equipment is clean and dry.  Test your container prior to pouring hot wax into it to be sure that it will not break and can be used safely. Place a small drop of hot glue on the metal bottom of the wick then place it into the center of the container making sure to press down well. The wick can be kept in the center by wrapping a small portion of the wick around a pencil that lies on top of the container.  Make sure to secure the pencil before pouring the wax. 

Safety is important when working with heat and wax so keep a fire extinguisher handy.  And never throw water on a fire caused by wax!

Use a large pan that is approximately 1/3 full of water and bring the temperature of the water to 212° Fahrenheit. Place your pot with wax into the water. Keep the water at the same temperature while melting the wax.  Do not let the water boil away; add water as needed. Use the thermometer to test the temperature of the wax.  Follow the manufacturer's suggested temperature for melting wax because it varies with different waxes.  Typically the best temperature for container wax is 170 - 175 degrees.  Never let the wax exceed 250 degrees! 

Once the wax has melted add the vybar or steric acid to the wax and mix well. The final step before pouring is adding color to your melted wax making sure to mix well.  You are now ready to pour your melted candle wax into your container.  Fill the container leaving approximately ¼ of headroom for the wick.  Once the candle wax has set you may then remove the pencil.  Trim the wick ¼ inch from the wax.

You have done it! You’ve made your first decorative candle and are now hooked.  You have so much to explore and lots of ideas.  As with all projects, have fun and be safe!

You could spread it cause more serious burns. Instead, run it under cold water until the wax hardens and it should fall right off.

Once you have poured your wax into your molds, it will need twenty-four hours or more to cool and harden completely. Once the candle has set up, it is time to decorate.

Add Personality To Your Candle Making

Choosing the right pattern for your candle is the most creative part of candle making. If you want to add a splash of color, try melting your favorite colored crayon for a vibrant look to your candle.

You can use just about anything from stencils to non-flammable beads to create works of art. You are limited only by your imagination.

To be safe, the main thing to keep in mind is that melting wax will burst into flame at only 375 degrees Fahrenheit. So use a thermometer, keep a fire extinguisher on hand, and heat the wax at a low heat. If there is a fire, it’s very important to use the extinguisher rather than throwing water on the fire. For a candle that burns properly, use skinny things for molds, such as a quart rather than a half gallon milk carton, a Styrofoam coffee cup, or a toilet paper roll. Now, carefully place the wicks in the center of each mould with wax. Keep the moulds aside for a minimum of five hours to allow the candles to cool down completely, and then remove them.

You will need to keep the wick held straight up until the wax has cured or dried completely. There are also some handy little devices you can find at candle making stores that will work just as well. You can find something fun to do with the kids for the rest of the day and in about five hours the candle will be dry. It can be so much fun to make candles and it makes kids feel good to be involved and have something to show for their efforts.

Dial temperature gauge is a handy tool that gives a good idea regarding temperature of the melting cooker and wax.

Once the wax melts, you can add the fragrance and color as per your choice, but make sure that you use the good quality ingredients to ensure the best burning quality. Colors usually deteriorate the performance of the candles, and as dyes and colorants are not combustible, they can clog the wick. The size of the wick is determined by the width of the container and not the height, and rule of thumb is wider the container, thicker the wick needs to be. Choose the shape and size of the container so that you can get the optimal burn.

Cylindrical is the ideal shape for a candle as it matches the burn pattern of the wax, and annealed glass is usually the most preferred choice for container. The candle wax is sold in blocks and bricks, and you need to break it down in smaller chunks that can melt quickly. To remove the candle from the rigid mold, invert it and tap gently. Some people like certain colors and strong smells, so if you plan to sell the candles you make, you will have to judge the liking of your target customers.

Whether you are a novice or an experienced candle maker, you can find the courses that can match your level of skill. However, 100% soy wax cracks when it cools and is also prone to syneresis, hence you can blend soy with paraffin. When you are just getting started you will want to stick to the more basic candle making recipes but as you gain more experience you can start to feel free to add more things in and be more creative. The container candles are really easy to make. There are several basic supplies that you will almost always have to use for your candles however and that includes wicks, wax, containers and fragrance. You can choose to make paraffin wax, soy or gel candles.

They burn longer and cleaner so you can get most aromatherapy properties because you will get the most smell of the fragrance you have used. Always be strategic when choosing your fragrances because each has its own very different purpose. In aromatherapy oils like lavender are used to relieve stress and promote relaxation, with a sweet and subtle aroma. It depends on what mood you are trying to set as to which fragrances are right for you to choose.

It is important to do a bit of research into aromatherapy to learn about the different essential oils and what they are all used for. Now you have everything ready to go and you need to melt the wax, adding in the fragrance after it has completely melted. It is fine to use pots that you have around the house but keep in mind you will probably not be able to use them again as they will be coated in wax or gel. The temperature used when making candles should never be more than 180 degrees so always keep your eye on the heat during the heating process.

After the mixture is melted and mixed together you glue one end of the wick in the container, then pour in the mixture. There are some wick holders you can buy today which are really hand to have around. This is important because if it is not held up until the mixture has dried completely it will get wet and you will not be able to light and use it afterwards. It is easy to see just how simple aromatherapy candle making can be and once you get the hang of it you could easily start making gifts or setting up shop to sell your lovely candles.
