More people are interested in the candle making process now than ever before. It is a great hobby to get started in because it is so fun and you can make beautiful, scented candles. Some people take the initiative to start up their own candle making business once they get the hang of things but you could also just use it as something to do in your spare time with the kids. Candle making for kids is possible you will just have to make sure you are there to take care of all the dangerous steps and just have them there to enjoy it with you. As long as you take care of all the difficult, dangerous parts then you will be fine and for instance you can get the kids to help you pick out the supplies. They can go shopping with you if you want to get started with candle making for kids and help you pick things like wicks, containers, fragrance and your wax or gel. You have a choice of either paraffin wax, soy wax or gel. Once you have your supplies you can get started on actually making the candles, for which you will need to heat the gel or wax in a heating pot or double boiler. Keep it at a medium heat and make sure the temperature never goes over 180 degrees, to avoid burning the mixture. After the wax or gel has melted you add in the fragrance and you do not have to use a specific amount. As the adult you should be the one monitoring the heating element and taking care of things but you can allow the children to pour in the fragrance if they stay far enough away from the heat. You do not want the smell to be overpowering when you go to light the candle once it is finished. The wick must be placed into the container at this point and again the kids can take care of this part because they cannot get hurt. The wick should be oversized a bit so it is as long as the length of the container plus about an inch or two. Do not let the child help with this part because even just a drop of the hot liquid on their skin will hurt. Pour the mixture into the container keeping the wick safely out of the way. You will need to keep the wick held straight up until the wax has cured or dried completely. There are also some handy little devices you can find at candle making stores that will work just as well. You can find something fun to do with the kids for the rest of the day and in about five hours the candle will be dry. It can be so much fun to make candles and it makes kids feel good to be involved and have something to show for their efforts.
